Arizona is falling behind on clean energy.

Utilities must act now to protect Arizona.

Arizona needs clean energy now.

The impacts of climate change are all around us, from drought and wildfires to extreme heat. Last year was the hottest Arizona summer on record, and we’re already on track for soaring temperatures again this season. Maricopa County reported 645 people lost their lives to heat-related illness in 2023.

Extreme heat also poses threats to the security and reliability of our electricity grid. Continued reliance on fossil fuels drives more extreme heat, threatening our economy, our livelihoods, and our health. In Arizona, burning fossil fuels to generate electricity is the number one source of the greenhouse gas pollution that drives extreme heat.

Arizonans recognize the need to act – 80% of Arizona voters, across party lines, prefer that their utility invest in clean energy sources. 62% of Arizonans believe that clean energy would improve public health and pollution.

But Arizona’s utilities are out of step and falling behind when it comes to clean energy commitments. In fact, Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service have some of the weakest decarbonization targets in the West. They can and should be doing more to protect the health and wellbeing of our families.

Utilities must move faster to bring the benefits of clean energy to Arizona.

In order to limit warming to no more than 2°C and avoid the most devastating impacts of climate change, we must achieve economy-wide net zero greenhouse gas emissions no later than 2050. For Arizona to do its part to achieve this ambitious and science-based goal, we must significantly accelerate the pace of emissions reductions from electricity generation today.

Unchecked climate change will devastate our Arizona way of life by imposing extraordinary costs to address the impacts, threatening reliable electricity service, risking dangerous blackouts, and killing hundreds or thousands of people each year. Our state is too valuable not to invest in a clean energy future. The longer we wait to reduce climate pollution, the more challenging the task becomes and the more devastating warming we allow to occur.

Acting today – when generous federal programs and tax credits are available – will make the transition more cost effective. Investments in clean energy are critical for the quality of life for Arizonans. Fighting climate change by providing clean electricity to our communities that is reliable and affordable is one way our Arizona utilities can help mitigate this crisis.

Arizona’s utilities can invest in clean energy sources to benefit the health and livelihoods of Arizonans.
