Who Really Pays for Data Centers?

What's powering the cloud could be draining our future.

Data centers power our digital lives — but without responsible policies, they ca demand enormous amounts of electricity and water while shifting infrastructure costs onto local communities.

Colorado families deserve transparency and accountability.

Senate Bill 26-102 ensures that massive data centers pay their fair share for the power and infrastructure they use, so that you don’t have to.

Recognizing the negative impacts data centers pose to the environment and consumers, Sen. Cathy Kipp and Rep. Kyle Brown introduced SB 102 (Large-Load Electricity Facilities) to put commonsense guardrails around data center development in Colorado.

It requires developers to use renewable energy and practice smart water consumption, as well as pay for the full cost of their electricity and any grid investments they require.

The Large-Load bill is not a ban on data center development in Colorado.

Rather, the bill would make Colorado a leader in enshrining consumer and environmental protections against data center development in statute.

Without smart policy, data center development threatens to increase our reliance on climate-warming fossil fuels, increase electricity bills for households already burdened with ballooning costs, and consume water resources that we simply don’t have to spare.

But there’s a better path forward.

Higher energy bills, increased air pollution, strain on water supplies, and other community and environmental impacts can easily be avoided with common-sense guardrails for data center development.

That’s why we’re calling on Big Tech and data center developers to do their fair share as the industry grows to protect everyday Americans and the places we love.

Policies like requiring water efficiency measures, allowing data centers to develop their own clean energy resources, and protecting customers through contract provisions can ensure that we move into the future and shepherd growth and innovation in a smart and sustainable way – without depleting our resources and passing on costs to households already struggling with ballooning energy bills.
