EV ready building codes are pro-community and pro-climate.
Summit County Council is voting on a measure to make sure new buildings in the county are ready to accommodate electric vehicle (EV) charging – and they need to hear your voice!
This building code update, developed by the County’s Planning & Zoning, Sustainability, and Transportation Planning teams, still needs to be approved by the Summit County Council. The vote will be held at their meeting on June 25th and you can submit a comment to the council in support of the building code update. Using your voice at the local level is a great opportunity to take climate action that directly benefits your community.
Summit County’s EV readiness building code would include:
- For new multi-family and commercial buildings, 5% of parking spots would have EV chargers, 5% would be EV-ready (have appropriate electric panel capacity and conduit leading to an outlet), and 10% would be EV-capable (have appropriate electric panel capacity with a dedicated branch circuit, which allows for easy install of conduit in the future).
- For new single-family homes, there must be one EV-capable parking spot.
Countless studies have proven that EVs greatly reduce harmful pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. By strategically advocating for policies like these, we’re paving the way toward a future where electric vehicles are the norm rather than the exception. Adopting an EV readiness building code in Summit County is a smart way to fight climate change, reduce harmful pollution, and build for the future.
