Area of Focus

Joan brings over 25 years of conservation leadership experience to Western Resource Advocates. She manages communications including media outreach to support the organization’s policy, program, and outreach objectives.

Background

Joan joined Western Resource Advocates in 2014. Previously, she was the Executive Director of the Sierra Nevada Alliance for twelve years working to protect Sierra waters, land, wildlife and rural communities. At the Alliance she grew the organization and led efforts establishing collaborative integrated water management, shaping sustainable land use planning, and helping resource managers adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Earlier in her career she was the National Press Secretary for Sierra Club, Campaign Director for Californians for Pesticide Reform, Executive Director of Pesticide Watch and program advocate for CalPIRG.

Favorite Thing About the West

Skiing – downhill, backcountry, cross country. I love the snow in Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico – the beauty and the glide are an out of this world combination.
